Guardians’ Visit is a conceptual storybook inspired by Japan’s UNESCO-recognized folk tradition known as Raihō-shin — ritual visits of masked and costumed deities who enter homes to bless families, ward off evil, and encourage good behavior, especially among children.

The book reimagines this tradition through a gentle, story-driven lens: mysterious guardian spirits visit a quiet town during the changing seasons, silently guiding, protecting, and encouraging the children they encounter. Drawing from customs like Namahage and Paantu, the characters are depicted not as frightening figures, but as warm, otherworldly presences — a visual metaphor for care, discipline, and invisible protection.

Illustrated with a soft, earthy palette and clean visual language, the book blends storytelling with cultural symbolism, aiming to introduce young readers to the beauty of intangible heritage in a way that feels magical, safe, and meaningful.

Created in response to a UNESCO-themed brief, Guardians’ Visit reflects my fascination with folklore and how visual design can be used to bridge cultural depth with emotional storytelling.
